Here's what the critics have to say about Straight From the Woods: "Bassman Steve Myers has nice, firm breathing control of the bottom end, the be-all and end-all to a genuine blues sound and singer-guitarist-frontman Mike "The Mossman" Myers has a gritty, grinding guitar style and vocals to match. The songwriting's good and shows signs of growth" -- Norman Provencher, The Ottawa Citizen "The rhythm of these 'juke joint blues' is hypnotic..." -- Liz Sykes, OBScene "...the brothers have a good grip on the Clarksdale trance-blues sound, with Steve holding down the bottom as Mike tosses out stuttering, sliding guitar riffs." -- Blues Revue Apr/May 2006 |

Straight from the Woods Sunday April 17th, 2005 was a typical sunny and warm spring afternoon in the Mississippi delta. People moved around in their usual slow delta pace. Mike and I stepped out of the cafe from a late breakfast, having slept in from the previous lat enight out. It was after all Juke Joint Festival weekend in Clarksdale. As we walked back to our apartment, we decided to take a detour to see if there were any signs of life at Jimbo's studio. Yazoo Avenue was deserted except for the parked van in front of Delta Recording. As we neared the older Chevy, Mike turned to me and said "I bet you that's Sam". As we approached, the woman lounging in the passenger seat acknowledged us as Mike inquired "Mrs. Carr?". "Yes, yes Sam's in the back". At that moment the van's side door slid open and from the inside came a voice "C'mon in". Sitting in the back seat, wearing a jacket and in sock feet was Sam Carr, holding a soda can with top cut out for his chewing tobacco juice. Here was the man himself, Mr. Sam Carr: the delta's premiere drummer and this year's nominee for a W.C. Handy Blues Award. Mike and I introduced ourselves and took a seat inside the van. Apparently, Sam had been driving around town since yesterday, looking for the two bluesmen from up north Canada. We chatted awhile as Sam talked about his days playing in the Jelly Roll Kings with Frank Frost and Big Jack Johnson. By two o'clock that afternoon, on Sam Carr's 79th birthday, the Myers Brothers from the frozen delta of Canada and Sam Carr from Lula, Mississippi sat down to play the blues. The result of this recording session is Straight from the Woods. Mike and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to make this blues recording with blues legend Sam Carr. We hope Straight from the Woods speaks to you, helps heal your hurts and soothes your soul. Peace and love in the blues. |
